1. Process description 

The Cyclonic Heat Exchanger (CHE), a patented process, simply integrates cooling coils in a cyclone.

 

Hot emission, contaminated with solid particles, fibres, oil mist, aerosols, micro-organisms, water dropplets,…can be simultaneously centrifuged and cooled down. Thanks to the very high centrifugal force created by the low slope of the coils, particles as small as 0.5µm can be removed without any mechanical filters and risk of clogging.

 

The heat from the emission can be either recovered for heating or process fluids or transferred to cooling fluids, like any kinds of cooling waters or freon.

 

Thanks to the high shear force, the CHE is a kind of “self-cleaning process”. Water condensation creates a water film on the wall of the cyclone, that continuously evacuates the other contaminants to the drain. If highly sticky materials are contaminating the emission, an automatic CIP may be recommended.

 

If necessary, heating coils may be added to reduce the relative humidity. This concept is an ideal air conditioning system and is called "Cyclonic Air Conditioneing System" (CACS)

2.1. Airec’Eau®  

The Airec’Eau® CHE is a very simple CHE mainly used for air dehumidification and heat recovery from emission. The air enters at the bottom and goes out at the top. If particles, like water droplets, are reaching the top of the cyclone, they hit against a flat disc fixed above the coils and falls to the bottom. This system can be easily manually cleaned with high pressure water after opening of the lid.

 

Standard available sizes: 1000, 2500, 5000, 10000 m3/h

 

All models smaller than 2500m3h can be supplied on skid with a Freon cooling group

 

 

2.2. Airec’Cold® 

The Airec’Cold® CHE has a higher heat exchange surface and a higher particle removal efficiency. The air enters at the top, flows down along the cooling coild, flows up through a central chimney and is evacuated at the top.  This concept evacuates the condensates more efficiently.

 

Standard available sizes: 500, 1000, 2500, 3500, 5000, 7500, 10000, 12500 m3/h

 

All models smaller than 2500m3h can be supplied on skid with a Freon cooling group

 

 

3. Applications 

The CHE is an ideal pre-treatment device for hot emissions saturated with humidity and containing other solid or fluid contaminants, like soot particles and oil droplets, that quickly contaminates standard heat exchanger

 

A second abatement step can be an activated carbon filter or a photo-oxidation, for VOC and odour abatement. If the condensation produces fine oil aerosols (oil haze), an electrofilter is recommended.

 

4. Advantages 

  • Robust system in stainless Steel (304 or 316)
  • Higher particle abatement yield than a standard cyclone (0.5µm vs 5µm)
  • no dirt accumulation if emission saturated with water; in case of low humidity, sticky materials may accumulate on the coils; in this case, a cleaning-in-place system (option) is recommended, if a manual cleaning is not possible
  • no risk of pressure drop increase  => constant efficiency
