1. Process description 

 

The “column electrofilters” (EF-C), keeps ionizing the particles during their residence in the electrofilter. In the center of the column, an ionisation rod permanently ionizes the particles during their residence in the column. The ionized particles are then attracted on the grounded surface of the column. They have been especially developped for emissions highly loaded with particles and/or humidity and at T° higher than 60°C

 

            

 

These electrofilters can work at higher ionisation voltage, up to 150kV, what improves the removal of very fine particles, mainly those between 0.1 and 1µm, that are difficult to separate, even with fine mechanical filters:

 

 

2. Models 

 

2 concepts of “column electrofilters” are available:
 
AairmaxX electrofilters:
AirmaxX electrofilters are built with thin EF columns of 110mm diameter with  circular or hexagonal sections ; they are recommended for flows up to 2500m3/h.
 
IonBlast Electrofilter:
Ionblast electrofilters are large columns of around 1.5m diameter and 5m height; they are recommended for flows from 2500m3/h

This serie is especially adapted for treating emissions from machines using oil or emulsions; the column height is either 50 or 75mm and their section is hexagonal
 
 
Serie AXwith pre-washer

 

If the emission contains volatile and sticky contaminants, like emissions from meat and fish smoking rooms, it has to be pre-washed in order to have as much contaminants as possible under aerosol form. The humidity increase helps to prevent particle sticking on the EF surface.

2.2. IonBlast electrofilter 

 

 

IonBlast electrofilters are large columns (diameter > 1m; height > 5m), with high voltage ionizers, up to 150kV. The flow enters the column at the bottom tangentially, which gives an extra cyclonic separation effect.

 

One column can handle a flow up to 5.000m3/h. For higher flow rates, cylindrical columns have to be installed in parallel or  hexagonal columns have to be integrated in a honeycomb structure.

 

 

 
 

 

 

 

For non sticky & dry particles, like milk powder, flour,… a vibration system suffices to make the powder cake fall down to the bottom.

 

For non sticky & fluid particles, like oil, the fluid falls via gravity at the bottom of the tank. The column can be either manually cleaned, via the man hole, or automatically cleaned, via a CIP (Cleaning-in-Place) system.

 

For sticky particles, either water is continuously sprayed on the wall, a system called wet electrofilter, or/and a CIP (Cleaning-in-Place) system is integrated in the column.

 

Thanks to its sanitary design, the Ionblast is the ideal concept for recovering valuable powders, like in the F&B and pharmaceutical industry.

 

If there is a risk of self-ignition, a fire-extinguishing system is integrated in the electrofilter

Sticky particles, smoke, oil haze, aerosol removal at T° < 80°C

 

4. Advantages of "Column" EF compared to "Plate" EF 

 

The column electrofilter concept has some major advantages:
  • the particles have a longer contact time with the ionizer, what increases the removal efficiency
  • the distance between the ionizer and the collection surface is high, what increases the loading capacity, prevents risks of short-circuit and reduces the cleaning frequency when contaminants accumulate on the surface.
  • the process T° can be higher since the column does not blend like plates
  • the process humidity can be higher since short-circuit risk is drastically reduced
  • the surface may be continuously sprayed with water in order to constantly evacuate the contaminants to the drain. This concept is called a “wet electrofilter
  • Sanitary design => particle recovery possible
